Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?

In this passage of scripture, the disciples just went through what seemed like their darkest hour.  They were still grieving and mourning the loss of their master,  who had been crucified in the sight of all Jerusalem.  They were trying to put the pieces together in their minds.  As they were walking and trying to figure this question out, Jesus appeared on the way with them, unrecognized by them and began to make sense of the scripture for them.

  • Luke 24:13-35 King James Version (KJV)

13 And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.

14 And they talked together of all these things which had happened.

15 And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.

16 But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.

17 And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?

18 And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?

19 And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:

20 And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.

21 But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.

    22 Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre;

23 And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive.

24 And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.

25 Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:

26 Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?

27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

28 And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further.

29 But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.

30 And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.

31 And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.

32 And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?

33 And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,

34 Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.

35 And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread.

This event took place after the Passover took place.  Jesus had already raised from the dead and news about his resurrection had begun to spread.

These two disciples were speaking to one another trying to make sense of the events that just took place in Jerusalem.  When we are trying to figure things out it is very helpful to have someone else to share your thoughts with.  If you have nobody to speak to, God will always listen.

εν τω ομιλειν – In the middle of their deeply discussing the matter.  (We get our word “Homily” from this Greek word)

και συζητειν – and discussing or debating the question at hand.  They were reasoning together.

συνεπορευε – I love this word.  Jesus appeared and was going to journey or walk with them.  I enjoy hiking immensely because of the fellowship that you can have while you walk.  Imagine listening to Jesus as he spoke along the way.

οφθαλμοι – We get the derivative  word “Optometrist” from this Greek word.

μη επιγνωναι αυτον – The Disciples were not able to recognize him as Jesus.  I wonder how many would recognize Jesus if he came back today and stood in the midst of a crowd.

αντιβαλλετε – They were in disagreement in their discussion.

σκυθρωποι – The disciples were gloomy and sullen.  This is never a good attitude to have while discussing anything.

και ουκ εγνως – He basically asked Jesus if he was ignorant.  This is my two cents on the matter:  Jesus knows everything that ever was, that is, that will be and that could have been.  There is nothing outside the scope of his omniscient knowledge.  he is also patient as we will see and understands that many times instead of casting our cares upon the Lord, we try to carry them ourselves.

ειπεν αυτοις ποια – the Lord already knows what we need but still wants us to personally ask him.

ηλπιζομεν – Their hope was well placed.

λυτρουσθαι τον ισραηλ – Redeeming Israel was the reason that he came.  Not for Israel only, but for all of the world.  He had come to seek and to save that which was lost.  Luke 19:10

ανοητοι – This is the same word used in Galatians 3:1.  He said that they were unthinking or not exercising their minds.  They were not perceiving the facts as they were.  God wants his people to be a thinking people.  We are to take the facts of the scriptures and reason with them.

βραδεις τη καρδια του πιστευειν – They were slow in heart to trust or have faith. We are to be a people of faith in God.  We are to trust the words that he gives us.  If you notice in this verse reason and faith are not opposed to each other like the secular humanistic thinker would have you to believe.  God gives us several facts to process and think about.  We are to put these things together and trust him as a result.  The Bible says that, “faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God.”  It is the facts of God’s promises that produce faith in our lives.  We must learn to trust him and not be slow to believe.

ουχι ταυτα εδει παθειν τον χριστον – The disciples were looking for his second coming where he comes to rule and reign.  In his first coming, he came to pay for the sin of the world.

διηρμηνευεν – Jesus was explaining thoroughly to them.  This expounding and explaining in depth is the task of every God called preacher who is teaching the Bible.

εν πασαις ταις γραφαις τα περι εαυτου – I would have loved to have been there to listen to the exposition of Moses and the prophets as Jesus pointed out himself in the scripture.

διηνοιχθησαν οι οφθαλμοι – They were wide eyed with the knowledge that they had been talking with Jesus.

και επεγνωσαν αυτον – They recognized him.  It was that moment when it all made sense to them and they understood that they had been in the presence of their master and friend, Jesus

ουχι η καρδια ημων καιομενη ην εν ημιν – How strongly do you yearn for the savior’s words.  Do you hang on every one of his words?

εν τη κλασει του αρτου – They had recognized how he had broke bread, that it was the same manner as they had seen previously.
